NVIDIA: The storytelling is the product.
Everybody is talking about NVIDIA, but how do they manage to generate buzz without any of those cool ads we love so much?
From the very first day we fell in love with big brands, they’ve been showing us commercials from Nike, Apple, Heineken, Mercedes-Benz, Sony, and all those super creative brands with big budgets and beautiful campaigns.
But what the heck has NVIDIA done to make us love it and consider it a love brand? Nothing. Well, except for creating the best product of the future and putting their entire budget into PR.
Years ago, no creative or agency would have wanted to work for a client that only did B2B or focused solely on PR. But today, NVIDIA makes it clear that the product is king and that PR beats even the greatest storytelling.
NVIDIA doesn’t need to tell fantastic stories, nor does it need a $2 million commercial to captivate its audience.
The storytelling and science fiction come in a small box measuring 30cm by 12cm. And the rest of the money? Spent on telling the world what’s inside that box.
It seems some brands don’t need to hire big advertising agencies but rather the best engineers to pave the roads of creativity with their product and take us straight into the future.
Their stock hasn’t stopped rising, their market cap is in second place behind Apple, and nobody can recall seeing their commercials on TV, YouTube, TikTok, or anywhere else.
This is a love story between the best product in the world and the best PR in the world.
If, back when I was studying advertising, I’d told my professors that you didn’t need good advertising to sell a product, I would’ve gotten an F—and rightly so. Today, they’d be the ones failing.
The world is changing. The nerds are the kings of the party, and they’re dancing with the hottest one on the dance floor.
Meanwhile, Coca-Cola, Apple, Nike, and the rest are still opening their massive wallets to communicate the same old message.
Is it time to innovate and push into the future, or can a good ad campaign still sell anything?
I don’t think so, my friend. NVIDIA is the new king of brands, and it’s here to stay.
Here’s the link to NVIDIA’s YouTube channel so you can see how boring and uninspiring it is—just to show you how the most powerful company in the world is built today.
